For those who haven't been keeping up, Sand & Steel is a collection of short stories, written in the style of old-fashioned pulp fantasy - otherwise known as "sword-and-sorcery". These aren't anything like the massive, shelf-breaking, phonebook-sized epic fantasy novels of today. Each of these tales (one of which is technically a novelette) are quick, punchy, bloody, and tinged with varying degrees of weird. As I stated in the book's introduction, I tried my hardest to present my own original ideas while also emulating the aesthetics of classic pulp fantasy authors like Robert E. Howard, C. L. Moore, Fritz Leiber and Michael Moorcock. It's a style that has waned in popularity since the end of the 20th century, but - as far as I'm concerned - its spirit of action-heavy escapism is still fresh today.
